Mina E. Khalil is a second-year Ph.D. candidate at the University of Pennsylvania, focusing on the modern legal, social, and political history of the Middle East. He also holds a B.A. in philosophy and political science from Stanford University, and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.
An Egyptian-American, he has been researching human rights in Egypt with local and international organizations, including the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights and Human Rights Watch, over the past ten years. From 2011 to 2013, he lived in Cairo following the January 25th Revolution where he worked at the Hisham Mubarak Law Center (HMLC) alongside pioneering Egyptian lawyers and human rights activists. From 2012 to 2013, he served as Visiting Assistant Professor of Comparative and Islamic Law at the American University in Cairo where he taught graduate courses on comparative, including Egyptian, constitutional law. He has extensive research experience in countries across the Middle East, including Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, and the UAE.
